Bears
In an age where technology reigns supreme in the toy arena with Nintendo and Playstation, there are some of us soft hearted individuals who opt to buck the trend and collectible bears are on our list of must haves. Teddy bears are highly sought after items. The origins of the teddy bear is believed to be linked to President Theodore Roosevelt who whilst on a hunting trip refused to shoot the poor bear who had been caught and tied to a tree on his behalf. The Washington Post got wind of this and did a front page cartoon caricature of the incident. Meanwhile a bright shopkeeper by the name of Morris Michtom took advantage of the media hype and displayed 2 bears made by his wife at his shop window and the craze began - Michtom aptly named them 'Teddy Bears' after the President. The Ideal Novelty and Toy Company was born. In the meantime in faraway Europe, the Steiff Company was manufacturing their own range of jointed bears and because the name 'Teddy bears' was such a hit, they decided to also name their bears as such and so the Teddy Bear phenomena was born.
